Bowne House
The Bowne House Advisory students are learning to make changes in themselves and the community around them. Students in the first year at John Bowne High School and beyond understand how best to work with their Advisor and team to create community projects that matter. The slogan, developed by Bowne House students – “ working together to make the world a better place.” reflects an example of the community spirit developed by these youngsters. By selecting an area to contribute their focused effort, students help others and learn more about themselves. Some of the community projects are: working with local Animal shelters, reading and performing for elementary school students, conducting raffle sales and bake sales to raise money for charity – “ The New York Times Neediest Cases” and Animal Haven, collecting canned food for the homeless during holiday times, drawing and designing thousands of colorful holiday cards for senior citizens, beautifying the hallways, and creating a chess/game club for JBHS students. Each student in Advisory group is given the unique opportunity to be an integral part of a team, to assume a leadership role and to reflect on self while gaining valuable social/emotional skills.
